BARCELONA: Spaniard Alejandro Valverde sealed a second Tour of Catalonia title in fashion by claiming the seventh stage on Sunday to complete one minute and three seconds forward of compatriot Alberto Contador within the basic classification.
Spaniard Valverde, 36, pipped Colombian Jarlinson Pantano on the end line to say his third stage win in every week.
Valverde had launched a late assault alongside Irishman Daniel Martin with three kilometres to go of the 138.7km race round Barcelona, which culminated with laps of Montjuic, the location of the 1992 Olympic Video games village.
Valverde’s fellow Spaniard and Movistar teammate Marc Soler got here third general, 1:sixteen adrift.
Tour de France champion Chris Froome tried to salvage some satisfaction after his poor show on the sixth stage with a late assault on the ultimate lap.
